Trieste, WWII. An amnesic soldier is saved by a Finnish neurosurgeon. He is found wearing a vest bearing a very Finnish name, Sampo Karjalainen. The surgeon tries and helps him recover the memories of his mother tongue, then sends him to Helsinki so he can return to himself.
Sampo is also the name of the Finnish "graal" in the Kalevala, a mythical object never properly described which brings prosperity and happiness - some sort of portable Eden.
While everyone wants to forget the war around and escape themselves, Sampo claws to that Eden he can't find, an identity that doesn't exist - because, of course, there was a quiproquo.
Also, this just confirms that Finnish is a pain to learn.
