Pretty fun gimmick for a book: The story is told through an auction of the couple's various letters, knick-knacks, mix tapes, etc. The story behind it is fine but the method is really the charm here, if you have the stomach for the characters (The boyfriend is a professional photographer and the girlfriend writes a cake-themed column in the New York Times). Feels something like a Chris Ware story at certain points. Was glad there was no kind of explicit maudlin Dear John letter, in fact there was a decent amount of subtlety about the various alcoholism, affairs, straining points that dot the relationship from beginning to end. Fun read.
