The Sleepers is a book about some people, who are related or are dating, in New York City, roughly now. I do not date but I live here, and I talk to people who are at least sort of like the people in the book.
One thing confuses me as I reflect on this book. I think the characters are very aware of themselves, and the world, who they are or aren't and wish they could be in it. I really like Matt's plays so I'm familiar with how he sees people being. However I do feel that people in The Sleepers mostly talk past each other. I didn't connect to that because I don't meet very many people like that, or at least it mostly isn't my conversational strategy. It happens sometimes but not usually.
I read this between Moby-Dick and the New Testament, so I have been spending more energy on those (to everything its proper due, I think). But I liked this book, and Matt's plays. I would recommend it. But I would still listen very carefully to my conversational partner and try to engage with what they said to me and not just listen to myself.
