The prose is deep and rich – it's influence clear from the first story. Schultz' abillity to weld the mudane with the sacred, secret, and esoteric makes it seem a lot longer than 100 pages. The characters of the father and Adela are particularly interesting – the whole episode of the birds provokes simalar feelings to the many wonders of "100 Years of Solitude." In a way you can see here the elephants in the butter for a lot of magical realism in "The Street of Crocodiles".
Still, this feels like the babysteps of a true saint of world literature. Scultz' murder just another of National Socialisms innumerable crimes. It would be like if Brett Easton Ellis was killed after completing "Less Than Zero", and we could only guess at what works like "American Psycho" would be. "Messiah", now committed to the flame, will haunt the dreams of any reader in-the-know forevermore, like a willow-a-wisp.
