A crew of 100 able bodied American soldiers starved, horribly and at great length, in a place where people had been raising babies for tens of thousands of years. It's a good book. The age of exploration was a fascinating time-- I had never heard about the Greely expedition before I read this but it makes for a great story. Definitely takes the some of the romance out of exploring the world on a wooden ship
