Robert B. Kane, Ph.D., born in Oak Park, Illinois, was Chairman of Mathematics and Science Education and Professor of Mathematics and Education at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana; previously a mathematics teacher with experience in the mathematics of industry. He went to the University of Illinois, where in 1950 he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics; in 1958 a Master of Science in Mathematics Education; and in 1960 a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education. Dr. Kane was a mathematics consultant to schools, wrote numerous articles for professional journals, and directed research on the readability of mathematics materials.
