Stoner is at times extraordinary, but I'm halfway through and I feel Edith is jarringly simplistic. The repetition of Stoner finding passion just for it be dashed by his timidity or his wife, who seems to be hellbent on ruining his life, is beginning to feel dull and rote.
And yet I think Edith is the perfect mirror of him? They're absolute co-conspirators in their own misery. I think it's also a complete fair point to note that she's an almost cartoonish harridan at points, and yet I can't imagine Stoner hitching up with anyone else, and so for that reason I was able to forgive the shrew archetype. Now, as to the larger question of whether or not you care to read about the tribulations of a dude with is tail tucked permanently between his legs, that's a question only you can answer. But I thought it was lovely.
