hello everyone, I've been beginning to get into photography more and the idea of creating art/collages via chopping up my photos appeals a tonne to me. I'm interested to see what I could do with them. does anyone have any books recommendations that might help me find inspiration for this? featuring examples of collages or even just interesting and moving photos? thank you I love the layout of this website

Personally, I love the way W.G. Sebald intersperses snapshots -- ranging from the utterly banal to the truly haunting -- throughout his books. His books wind up being collages of a sort too.

Do you like photobooks? I have a lot of great photobooks and can recommend some to you, that's my favorite medium that handles what you asked to find great visual collages and """aesthetics"""

professional option: the book "nature's palette" from princeton press reads like a very neat work of collage indie option: search "collage zines" on etsy. they're loveable

Can't say I have much experience with this medium, but one book that immediately comes to mind is Atlas by Philippe Seclier. It's a survey of the architecture of Tadao Ando. Rather than relying on huge spreads focusing on sweeping vistas and facades, Seclier uses 8-9 small shots per page, each highlighting an individual feature like a window or staircase to communicate the overall feel of the building. It's not collage in the traditional sense, but something that may inspire you.

I have no idea if this will help, but certain surrealists would use collage. Max Ernst in particular. There is a short section in Mel Gooding's A Book of Surrealist Games (Ch 2 Visual Techniques). Two more theory-oriented sources that go into Ernst's thinking are Charlotte Stokes' "Collage as Jokework" [1] and Warlick's Max Ernst and Alchemy: A Magician in Search of Myth (Ch 5 Collage as Alchemy).
