Some say that by reading one of Meša's Novels, you've read them all. If that really is the case, then I suggest this one be the one you read. I feel like this is the most mature and complete version of the story that he told so many times and is without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read.
It's a story about a Bosnian dervish Ahmed Nurudin, who struggles with his faith in God and the state as he is forced to navigate the absurd bureaucracy of Ottoman empire.
350 pages of being inside of the mind of a flawed, yet extremely self-aware man who's increasingly disillusioned with the system to which he devoted his life.
On top of the existential questions, moral dilemmas and critiques of Ottoman society and power structures in general, this book is really a window into the soul of the author. It makes you hate him, love him, get frustrated with him and cry for him. Not many people can punch you in the gut quite like Meša.
