I read this entire 529-page book in one sitting - I stayed up until sunrise because I couldn't put it down. Not only does Eugenides write beautiful prose, but his ability to write a cohesive story at this level of length and complexity (spanning three generations over eighty years) that still manages to be a page-turner is commendable. There was not a single section of the novel that I wanted to skip or put down. There's a sort of detached irony in all of the observations about immigration, race, and sexuality in 20th century Detroit (probably due to Cal's omniscient narration, a tool I think works perfectly here). I absolutely loved this.
