Comedy classic A Confederacy of Dunces remains relevant and entertaining 40+ years after it was published (and more than 50 years after it was written). Ignatius J. Reilly's histrionic attempt to satisfy his mother's demand that he finally find a job takes him and the reader through a huge cast of characters in 1960s New Orleans. Ignatius rampages through scenes and set pieces that include : racial divisions in factory work, police ineptitude, gay culture, racial prejudice in hiring practices, exotic dancing, the distribution of pornographic material to minors, hot dog cart culture, liberal self-aggrandizement, white savior culture, bus travel, zoophilia, elder abuse, matrimonial disharmony, and lutes.
"Any downside?" - Yeah, it's a little long and Ignatius can be an unpleasant main character - he's legitimately insane and behaves accordingly.
"Worth my time?" - 100%. If you haven't read it you should, if you've already read it, you should read it again.
