Genuinely an interesting dissection of the conditions which caused the old south and its central institution of slavery to form. In today's age where it's all written off with lazy assumptions of evil (despite southerners coming from extremely similar English stock to the north), this book is a welcome respite. Maybe the author also thinks africans are an inferior race and says as much by page three, but it's all water under the bridge now. Together, with white superiority and black savagery, the author holds out hope after treacherous yankee interloping that the two friends can still make a bright future together.
