Read the Peter A. Bien translation
Fantastic, terribly moving book. Always found the Scorsese adaptation cheesy in a particularly dated late 80s way and this clears it by a country mile. Even in translation Kazantzakis's language is so rich and beautiful, full of gorgeously left-field descriptive language and real, deep spiritual feeling (according to Bien these kinds of descriptions are common in Demotic Greek someone in the know please confirm this for me). Divine blasphemy of the highest order. For Jesus to be God he must also have been man; he needed to doubt and lust to render the ultimate sacrifice. Love the characterization of Judas
Completely unrelated but RIP David Lynch. Hope you enjoy your stay in the White Lodge
