It's an interesting book about the origin of ICUs from polio at a time before vaccines when children and adults were sentient enough to try to keep alive with tracheostomy despite respiratory failure. If not for polio showing that some could still live with respiratory support rather than immediately crumping and dying, modern day ICUs may not have come at the time they did.
