I had a disquieting experience a few days ago coming across a poem by Elizabeth Bishop online that really knocked me out, and then realizing that I had zero memory of it despite having already read all her poems in this book. Depressing! My takeaway is that I should start reading poetry in smaller bites, or focus on reading individual collections instead of "complete poem" anthologies. Otherwise everything starts to blur together.
Anyway, these poems are great. Here's a part I underlined in one describing an underwater visit to the home of a river spirit. Bishop is great at writing these sumptuous, silky (and here, sibilant) descriptions of real or imaginary things:
