Terribly funny book, Krzhizhanovsky has an insane talent for threading the needle between the funniest kind of absurdism and heartbreaking revelations, a real master in tone. The story of paper going on strike against man stands out for its loving absurdity, the kind of thing a man who loves literature can write. The masterstroke here is the melancholy that Krzhizhanovsky lets slip in from his life. The title story that crowns the book is a series of letters a man writes to strangers based on their windows, seeing a connection with a stranger based purely on their lights staying on well into the night is a beautiful exercise in empathy and loneliness.
