This book is about antibiotics but also about how culture shapes industries. Specifically it describes how Germany managed to produce the first sulfa antibiotics with industry working with research academics while other countries like England and France fell behind as England expected their academics to work without the taint of money. It's a reminder that industry plays a major role in bringing discoveries to people to improve their lives and that maybe academics by itself is insufficient to translate discoveries to life improvements.
Or at least that's what I tell myself as the conventionally attractive medical device saleslady asks me to try out one of her devices over a free industry sponsored lunch.
