A wholly surprising novel. The voice, the plot, the sentence structure, the characters, the literary allusions, the humorβall of it coalesces into a book that reminds of you no other book you've ever read. The narrator, who alternately goes by Bonbon, Me, and the eponymous Sellout, spends most of the novel working in cahoots with a former Little Rascal to bring segregation back to his underserved (and essentially unacknowledged in its existence) Los Angeles town. This is, incredibly, way funnier and touching than it sounds.
"Any downside?" β Some of the writing can be Pynchonesque. Meaning you might have to take more than one crack at deciphering some of the sentences. Whatever, you'll be okay, that's the fun of reading.
"Worth my time?" β 100%. It's original, insightful, and funny, and it offers a unique POV on race in America.
