The most interesting part here isn't necessarily the technical challenges although there are many, but the egos and personalities that dominate the space and the way they interact. You can almost see into the minds of these surgeons striving for glory, and their downfall afterwards as Barnard destroys his life after victory and ruins his reputation shilling anti aging cream, failing to make a true transplant center like Shumway or the interpersonal conflicts like how DeBakey, son of immigrants drugstore owners in Louisiana seethes at the charismatic and popular Cooley, "the handsomest son of a bitch to ever pick up a scalpel". There's too much stuff out there painting surgeons as instant medical heroes because that's inspiring rather than describing how flawed they can be, and it's cool here to see the thoughts behind the mask.
Side note: The author seems to talk a lot about how much these dudes fuck. It's personally distasteful to me as a incel but it's fine I guess.
