I quite enjoyed these short stories, which, set in quaint surroundings against a backdrop of war, have both a modern and provincial flavour. Calvino writes simply and with elegant turns of phrase. As with every anthology there are stories that are just so-so but I was very taken by A Goatherd at Luncheon, Father to Son, and The Argentine Ant.
