The gimmick here is that each of the 24 chapters is a single 1-5 page sentence, and I always respect writing something a little stupid like that just to see how it goes – I guess one person's gimmick is another's paradigm-shattering creative constraint – but what really recommends this book is, in my opinion, is the author's playwright background and the kind of cinematic feeling he achieves (without ever giving the sense that the book really should have been a movie), and, I won't lie, the actual plot was not quite memorable, but The Assignment has a unique and theatrical voice that played very well with the relentless, breathless feeling of multi-page sentences; overall, after finishing an 800 page novel, this was lovely for a shorter and easier read that still gave me a few things to ponder.
