This was my first Elmore Leonard read and I was left feeling unsatisfied. The premise of the book is interesting: a regular Joe compromises his own witness testimony to let a career criminal off the hook and they later team up for a string of small robberies hoping to amass a quick buck and quickly get out. I didn't feel like Leonard did a good job at getting me to feel the stakes the characters were in or become invested in them at all. There were too many portions where I had to suspend my disbelief. Somehow the prose felt meandering even though this was a short novel with short sentences.
