this was said earlier below, but it would depend on what you mean by "gothic". Do you mean vampires and shit or just general bleakness and despair? Im slavic so if you mean the latter I would recommend anything from 'the death and the dervis' (or however they translated it to english, im referring to derviš i smrt) to like roadside picknick by the strugatski brothers. Idk if thats what you were thinking of though. If not, then like edgar allen poe, HP lovecraft, or mary shelly would be a good start-- idk abt modern though good modern shits hard to find ( house of leaves for despair??)

Château d'Argol by Julien Gracq is very good. It's gothic horror and has a cool creepy castle and spooky woods. I'd rec anything by Gracq. (Also seconding John Hawkes.)

Not sure how much it counts as straight "gothic," but in terms of bleakness and dense prose style, The Cannibal and The Lime Twig by John Hawkes are both primo shit
