The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith is a personal favourite - very raw depiction of racial violence, and hilariously politically incorrect nowadays.

Alexis Wright - Carpentaria A genuine modern classic within the Australian literary scene, one of the few writers this country's produced that can stand up with the rest of the world. Particularly in the sense it embraces Australian culture without the trappings of the cultural cringe, but at the same time not falling into the inelegance of someone like Tim Winton.

The only Murnane I've read is Tamarisk Row but I recommend. It's fantastic. Check out some Peter Carey as well. I'm also really curious to read Helen Garner's novel Monkey Grip.
