Favorite Jane Austen book? Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books, I've read it 3 times, but I'm embarrassed to admit I haven't finished one of her others even though I own most of them

Absolutely Emma. I also enjoyed Sense and Sensibility.

pride and prejudice is the most popular for a reason! it's literally a perfect plot. emma is a close second.

I quite like H. W. Garrod's funny polemical essay, "Jane Austin: a Depreciation" (you can find it here: https://archive.org/details/discussionsofjan0000will/). I think Austin's interesting for precisely the reasons Garrod hates her.

I suppose I agree with his thoughts on Austen's lack of scope, but like you say I don't see it as a bad aspect of her writing. It's a major deficiency of her work if you'd like it to touch on more than she seeks to touch, but I don't think she needs to.
