Looking for a history of modern Japan covering, say, the Edo period to like the 1990s or later. "The Making of Modern Japan" looks good. Anyone read it or have other suggestions?

I can recommend the film about Mishima from an arm's length and the works of Izumi Kyoka if you want something cultural. These are both very small scale, but from the description of The Making of Modern Japan (haven't read it sorry) it seems like it will look at societal change so I wanted to recommend something with a smaller scope and a focus on how the people were feeling and doing. Keep in mind Mishima was an exception and not at all the regular, but his character emphasizes some of the issues the traditionally quiet japanese people just didn't feel like being vocal about. Izumi Kyoka on the other hand is had a more healthier way of keeping in touch with that traditional element of the past
