Didion's cynical and scalpel-sharp prose is perfectly suited for describing a chamber of horror like eighties El Salvador, a place where nothing made sense and the absolutely terrible was completely mundane. This is a place under siege from itself, where murder hangs in the air in every room and where things are so distorted that there's no way for anyone to truly know what's going until the gunmen burst into your room. Closing passage is devastating.
