The eponymous story, Daddy, is probably the best at this. A father hosts his three adult children, and tries not to show anger or bitterness at the contempt and entitlement of his children. He takes in reproaches probably formulated with the help of psychologists he pays for, and he feels wronged but doesn't say anything. The reader can eventually guess there was some explosive anger and violence 20 years ago, but why won't they forget and forgive?

This is the uncomfortable place we all have to linger at some point, a sort of purgatory. What is the way out? Accepting guilt is not the point, rather, a wider responsibility coupled with the willingness to endure seems to be a solution - but Cline doesn't know, or rather, doesn't say.
