Slice of life short stories, but all characters are close to be news items: the canceled Hollywood producer at his son's première ; the LA wannabe actress on the verge of prostitution; the part-time father tasked with picking up his bully of a son from school; the farm boy who got the sister of his boss pregnant and joins this weird family - among others.
The main thread (at least, the one I pulled) is the consequences suffered and bewilderment at one’s responsibility in all this. The stories do not rely on cheap schadenfreude; on the contrary, they only share the malaise everyone will experience at some point when the result of mindless actions and inactions comes in, mostly as a surprise.
The eponymous story, Daddy, is probably the best at this. A father hosts his three adult children, and tries not to show anger or bitterness at the contempt and entitlement of his children. He takes in reproaches probably formulated with the help of psychologists he pays for, and he feels wronged but doesn't say anything. The reader can eventually guess there was some explosive anger and violence 20 years ago, but why won't they forget and forgive?
