Why my literature professor thought this was a good 'first exposure to DeLillo' text is beyond me. Almost swore him off for good after this absolute slog. A shame considering how interesting the premise is! Terrorism, hostages, a reclusive writer, weird relationship dynamics...

read white noise for something "poppy" and libra if you want something "epic"
It's a great book. I disagree it's a good first DeLillo book. Read White Noise, End Zone, or Omega Point. The latter two are shorter novels.
Hmmm I read it years ago. Is it worth trying again, or should I just move to his other stuff? I read his short story 'Midnight in Dostoevsky' recently and loved it
I would read other Delillo works first. You may still not like it years later though. DeLillo's Underworld is considered his finest work, but that was a slog for me personally.
You make it sound so boring but then go on to drop how the themes are actually kinda exciting. I'm kinda curious now...might have to add this to the list. I liked reading Delillo's White Noise years ago.
The themes are exciting, which is why I was so disappointed. The execution was pretty meh. Give it a go and let me know what you think though
I'm with you; this one is a bit of a mess. Definitely not the best DeLillo and not a good intro either imo. Libra, Underworld, and White Noise are all excellent.
