I need to reread this because I still think about it from periodically. Intending to look for a random Mishima novel, I ended up picking this out on a whim in the Japanese literature section of my local library instead a couple of years ago. I think the closest thing I've read to this is The Plague (probably not the best comparison but both convey the struggle to simply exists despite the unsparing and uncontrollable conditions of the country that its characters find themselves in), but this book portrays desperation in an intense way that The Plague doesn't and the focus on character drama allows for that aspect to flourish. The protagonist has a strange type of admirable strength despite trying to cling onto the edenic past of her Indochina days while trying to survive the harsh reality of postwar Japan.
(Also not to bring goodreads into this but that website has done this book dirty)
