Algren does a great job painting a picture of an assortment of street punks in 1940s Chicago. The choice to write the characters' dialogue in a pseudo-transatlantic accent, while annoying at first, adds some additional flavor to flesh out the environment of the time period for somebody reading the book almost 80 years later. I'm excited to check out the movie adaptation with Sinatra, despite Algren's negative feelings towards it.
